Wolfgang Maass ist Professor für Digitale Medien an der Hochschule Furtwangen. Seine Forschungsinteressen liegen in den Bereichen Informationsmanagement und Informationssysteme. Aktuell fokussiert er auf die Gestaltung und Realisierung Smarter Produkte und insb. den Diensten zur Bildung und Visualisierung dynamischer Produktnetzwerke,  wissensbasierter Preisgestaltung und dem mobilen Wissensaustausch. Ebenso untersucht er mittels empirischer Studien die Adoption und Diffusion von Informationsgütern und Mobilanwendungen gerade im Hinblick auf Smarte Produkte.
Er promovierte an Naturwissenschaftlich-technischen Fakultät  I (Mathematik und Informatik) der Universität in Saarbrücken über ein DFG-Stipendium des Graduiertenkollegs "Kognitionswissenschaft". Ende 2007 wurde er an der Universität St. Gallen in Betriebswirtschaft habiliert und dort zum Privatdozenten ernannt. Er ist Visiting Professor am Department of Bioinformatics & Computational Biology an der University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center (Juli 2009 bis Januar 2010). Seit Anfang 2009 leitet er die Forschungsgruppe 'Smarte Produkte' am Institut für Technologiemanagement (ITEM) an der Universität St. Gallen (HSG) und kooperiert mit dem Auto-ID Lab an der ETH Zürich.
